Like a classic pop song with a great key change, the triangular Land Mermaid shawl starts off simple, but gets a bit jazzy. The stocking stitch centre and contrasting lace panels make it both cosy and a little bit fancy.

Perfect for showing off contrasting fingering-weight yarns, it makes a great stashbuster – or a way to show off that special pairing you’ve been saving.

The lace sections of the shawl are fully charted, with instructions for both a smaller and larger shawl. Both sizes are pictured in this pattern; the green shawl is the small size, and the deep red shawl is the large.

The combination of soothing stocking stitch and simple lace makes it the perfect project for an advanced beginner who’s looking to up their game.

Key information

Land Mermaid comes in two sizes; a smaller size, which uses a 100g skein paired with a contrasting 20g mini skein, and a larger size which uses two 100g skeins.

Both follow the same simple top-down construction, beginning with a garter tab cast-on. There’s a 3 stitch garter border at the start and end of each row, with yarn over increases worked at the start and end of the main panel, and either side of a centre stitch. The same instructions are used for both sizes until the first lace panel, at which point separate instructions are written for each size.

The lace charts show one half of the shawl, and don’t include the garter border or centre stitch. After working across the chart once, work the centre stitch in stocking stitch, and then work the chart again.

Suggested yarn: For hints and tips on yarn substitution, have a look at my blog. For a more affordable alternative to the yarns used in the samples, I recommend Cascade Heritage 4ply (100g, 400m per skein)
Small sample uses: 100g GamerCrafting Sock 4-ply (75% merino, 25% nylon, 400m/438yds) in main colour, and 20g GamerCrafting Sock 4-ply (75% merino, 25% nylon, 80m/88yds) in contrast colour.
Large sample uses: 100g GamerCrafting Sock 4-ply (75% merino, 25% nylon, 400m) in main colour, and 100g Biff Sugar Yarns sock 4ply (75% Superwash Merino 25% Nylon, 425m/464 yards).
Suggested needles (and notions): 4.00mm (US 6) long circular needle, 2 stitch markers
Gauge: Gauge isn’t critical, but the sample measures 20st and 32 rows to 10cm (4in) square, measured over stocking stitch.
Finished size: The small sample measures 62cm (24.5in) by 140cm (55in). The large measures 70cm (27.5in) by 152cm (60in)
